What happens if your car is damaged in an on airport car park?

An article in the Guardian newspaper today raises an interesting question. What happens if another driver damages your car whist parked in a self park airport car park -at the official car parks at most UK airports?

A reader writes tells the newspaper that they parked their car at Stansted's official on airport car park, paying extra for valet parking 'as it provided greater security than self-parking'. When they collected the car, it had significant scratching - it had been damaged whilst in the car park. However, BAA said that it was not responsible because its terms and conditions state it is not liable for damage caused to cars once they are parked.

A quick check of the terms and conditions at other UK airports reveals that this is the case at other airports too. So, not only are you not covered if another driver damages your car whilst in an airport self park car park, even with valet parking, the company is only liable for damage caused by its drivers and not for damage caused whilst the car is parked.

The article is a 'timely reminder that cars are not automatically safe just because they are parked at an official airport car park', the newspaper adds. So maybe that is another benefit of off airport parking. Not only is it cheaper than on airport parking, if your car is returned damaged, you are covered. Not so at an on airport car park, it seems.
